Additionally she completed an Infection Control Fellowship at the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario, University of Ottawa in Canada.

Karen is currently the Infection Preventionist Consultant for the Quality, Safety and Oversight Group at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. From 1988 to 2014, she was a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine in Chapel Hill and continues as an adjunct faculty member. Karen has specialized in infection control and prevention for over 30 years, beginning at the Detroit Medical Center, then at the University of Virginia Hospitals, and prior to joining CMS, for 23 years as the Associate Director and consultant for the North Carolina Statewide Program for Infection Control and Epidemiology (SPICE). Karen currently serves as the 2019 APIC President. She is a Fellow in both the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). Karen has been the recipient of several awards, including, the 2010 SHEA “Advance Practice Infection Preventionist Award”. She was the first recipient of the Infection Control Today, “Infection Control Educator of the Year”. And she was presented the “Old North State Award” for her dedicated service to the citizens of North Carolina. She has been an invited speaker to state, national, and international conferences and has authored many abstracts, articles, and book chapters. Karen earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University and her Master’s in Healthcare Epidemiology from the University of Virginia.

Dr. Bill Rutala is the Director and co-founder of the Statewide Program for Infection Control and Epidemiology and a Research Professor for the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina's School of Medicine. He was the Director of Hospital Epidemiology, Occupational Health and Safety Program at the University of North Carolina Hospitals for 38 years before retiring in May 2017. He is a retired Colonel with the U.S. Army Reserve and is certified in infection control. He has been an advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (a former member of the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee [HICPAC], 1999-2003), the Food and Drug Administration (a former member of the General Hospital and Personal Use Devices Panel), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel on Antimicrobial Research Strategies for Disinfectants) and the Federal Trade Commission. Dr. Rutala is a member of various committees on the local, state, national and international level as well as several professional societies including the American Society for Microbiology, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology and the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America. He serves on the editorial board of the Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology and The Journal of Hospital Infection. He has more than 600 publications (peer-review articles, books, book chapters, brief reports) in the fields of disinfection and sterilization (to include several guidelines such as the CDC Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities), and the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Dr. Rutala has also been an invited lecturer at over 370 state, national and international conferences (in over 40 states, 35 countries) and has testified twice before the U.S. Congress. Dr. Rutala earned his Bachelor of Science degree in science from Rutgers University, his master's degree in microbiology from the University of Tennessee, and both his master's in public health and doctorate in microbiology from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health.
His contributions to infection prevention have been acknowledged by professional organizations with the following awards: Carole M. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award (APIC, 1999), Lowbury Lecture (Healthcare Infection Society, Scotland, 2002), Hygiene Medal (Rudolf Schulke Foundation, Germany, 2013), Larson Lectureship Award (APIC, 2012), SHEA Lectureship (SHEA, 2012), Barr Distinguished Alumni Award (UNC School of Public Health, 2012), Kelsey Lecture (United Kingdom, 2001 and 2012), Crawford Award (lifetime achievement, OSAP, 2008), and Favero Lectureship (APIC, 2009). She previously served as Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Westchester Medical Center, a 650 bed tertiary/quarternary care facility north of New York City, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College. Dr. Haas is an associate editor of the American Journal of Infection Control, and co-editor of the ‘Methodology Minute’ section. She has served as the chair of the APIC Professional Development Committee and is a member of the New York State Department of Health Healthcare Associated Infections Technical Advisory Work Group; she previously served on the APIC Scientific Research Council. Dr. Haas has authored the Hand Hygiene chapter of the APIC text, as well as several peer-reviewed publications in the field of infection prevention and control. She has presented at the local, regional and national level. Her research interests include Hand Hygiene, Environmental Disinfection and Computer-aided Surveillance.

Dr. Carol M. McLay is the CEO of Infection Control International and is a consultant in the fields of healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention and control, and public health. Carol received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Ottawa in Canada, an MPH from Emory University, and a DrPH in epidemiology at the University of Kentucky. She is an instructor at the University of Kentucky where she shares her passion and expertise with students in the College’s of Public Health and Nursing. She devotes much of her time to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), where she serves as the Lead Nurse Planner for their continuing education activities. She recently returned from Sierra Leone where she worked with the WHO Ebola Response Team as an Infection Prevention and Control Specialist.
Carol is an active APIC member and served as Chair of the Communications Committee from 2012-2014. She currently serves as a member of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA)‘s External Affairs Committee. Dr. Tamer Saied is currently the manager of the project “ Improving Healthcare quality and Safety in Egypt and Jordan” conducted by the US Naval Medical Research Unit No.3, Cairo, Egypt, which aim to establish national networks for surveillance and reporting of healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance in more than 170 hospitals in Egypt and Jordan. He is the co-principal investigator in the projects of surveillance of sever acute respiratory and acute febrile illness.
After finishing his residency program in Geriatric Medicine at Ain Shams University in 2002, Dr. Saied switched career to Infectious disease, and infection control. He completed a diploma of Hospital Hygiene and infection control from Université Claude Bernard Lyon in 2006, a postgraduate certificate of epidemiology of infectious disease from Iowa University in 2008, and more than 2000 CME hours of infection control and hospital epidemiology.
Since 2003, Dr. Saied has been consulted for the NAMRU3 and the WHO-EMRO to support many countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region, to establish national programs of infection control (Egypt 2003-2006, Jordan 2006-2008), emergency planning and preparedness for pandemics (2007-2014), outbreak investigations (2010-2016), and surveillance of healthcare associated infections (since 2009).
Dr Saied authored and coauthored more than 30 publications in infection control and hospital epidemiology including national guidelines of infection control (Egypt, Jordan, and Kenya), training curricula, manuscripts, position papers, and presentations. He has been the Country Moderator-Egypt, of the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMed-mail), in charge of writing posts on the events of Infectious Diseases, since August 2017.
In 2008, Dr. Saied was awarded a scholarship for completion of certificate in epidemiology of infectious disease at the University of Iowa, College of Public Health, USA. In 2012, he was Selected as International Ambassador of Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).
Dr. Saied is an active member of many international scientific societies, including the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID), Egyptian Society of Infection Control (ESIC), and the Society of Infection Control Professionals (SPIC-Egypt).
