Sanford Burnham Prebys NCI-Designated Cancer Center, Dr. Garth Powis, Director, Sanford Burnham Prebys NCI-Cancer Center, La Jolla, California, is a molecular and translational pharmacologist with more than 350 publications and 15 patents. His research focuses on the mechanisms that enable cancer cells to survive stress. Powis’ work has resulted in three novel cancer drugs currently in clinical trials. The expertise he brings to SBP encompasses all stages of cancer drug discovery and development, from early target identification to clinical studies with cancer patients. Dr. Powis trained at Oxford University before working at the Mayo Clinic, becoming deputy chair of Pharmacology; at University of Arizona Cancer Center as director of Basic Research; and most recently at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he served as chair of Experimental Therapeutics and director of the Center for Targeted Therapy.

Dr. D. Lynn Kirkpatrick, CEO, Ensyce Biosciences, La Jolla, California, has focused her entire career on cancer drug discovery and development. Former Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Regina, Canada, she has co-founded two start up companies and successfully brought three novel cancer drug candidates into human clinical trails. Following the acquisition of her first company, by Biomira Inc., (Oncothyreon) in 2006, Dr. Kirkpatrick took the role as the Chief Scientific Officer of the merged company. She became President and CEO of Ensysce Biosciences Inc. in January 2009. Dr. Kirkpatrick received her PhD from the University of Saskatchewan and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. She has published extensively in the area of targeted cancer drug discovery and development and holds numerous patents for novel targeted cancer drugs.

Dr. Roy Herbst is recognized for his leadership and expertise in lung cancer treatment and research. He is best known for his work in developmental therapeutics and the personalized therapy of non-small cell lung cancer, in particular the process of linking genetic abnormalities of cancer cells to novel therapies. Prior to his appointment at Yale, Dr. Herbst was the Barnhart Distinguished Professor and Chief of the Section of Thoracic Medical Oncology in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology, at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (UT-MDACC) in Houston, Texas. He also served as Professor in the Department of Cancer Biology and Co-Director of the Phase I Clinical Trials Program. Dr. Herbst’s primary mission is the enhanced integration of clinical, laboratory, and research programs to bring new treatments to cancer patients. He has led the Phase I development of several of the new generation of targeted agents for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including gefitinib, erlotinib, cetuximab, and bevacizumab. More recently, he participated in the successful registration of pembrolizumab for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer, following the successful Yale-led KEYNOTE 10 study of the immune therapy drug commonly used to treat other cancers.

Dr. Stanley R. Hamilton is a gastrointestinal and molecular pathologist and Professor and Head of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center since 1988. He has been active in the cooperative oncology group setting as a member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, now ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group for more than two decades and has published studies of the molecular pathology of colorectal cancer using specimens from ECOG clinical trials. He is a member of the ECOG-ACRIN Disease Oriented Committee/Modality Oriented Committee (DOC/MOC) and the Leadership group. He continues to participate as pathologist for the Gastrointestinal Committee and has served since 1992 as Chair of the Laboratory Science and Pathology Committee that has responsibility for the earlier Pathology Coordinating Office and other core biorepositories, and is an ECOG-ACRIN representative on the NCI Group Banking Committee of ECOG-ACRIN. He is also a member of the Advisory Panel for the NCI Cooperative Group Banks Navigation System IT Project and the Principal Investigator for MD Anderson Cancer Center as a Scientific Member in ECOG-ACRIN. At MD Anderson, he has served as PI of the Cancer Center Support Grant-sponsored Tissue Biorepository and Pathology Resource core facility since 1998.
